Athens Winterguard season in full swing
Athens High School and Athens Middle School Winterguard teams at a competition in Murfreesboro, Tennessee on January 25, 2020
Winterguard is called “the sport of the arts.” Athens High School and Athens Middle School each have a team. These performers dance with drama, grace and skill while tossing and twirling rifles, sabres and flags on a gym floor.
The choreography and material is very challenging and quite different from marching band’s colorguard. The teams must learn to work together as one with their peers, so collaboration is an important life skill learned in Winterguard. To be a Winterguard team member requires serious determination and work ethic, and of course, love for the sport.
Winterguard typically participates in five competitions regionally. Four are regular season competitions. Their season culminates with the the SCGC National Championship at Western Kentucky University in Bowling Green. Both the AHS and AMS teams represent our schools and community well, and we wish them the best of luck this season.
Winterguard is under the direction of sponsor Rebecca Mealer and choreographer Jamarcus McCullough. The teams will compete at the following events: Siegel High School in Murfreesboro, Tennessee on January 25; Hoover High School in Birmingham on February 8; Bob Jones High School in Madison on February 29; Spring Hill High School in Columbia, Tenneessee on March 14; and at the SCGC Championships in Bowling Green, Kentucky on March 27-28.
