Ms. Cindy Davis

I have been in education for over 30 years. I taught 4th and 6th grades for 13 years. I have been a school administrator for over 20 years. I received an Education Specialist degree in Instructional Leadership from the University of North Alabama (UNA). My favorite subjects to teach are English and Science. I love to find new ways to use technology. But, most of all, I love to learn - about anything!

I was born in Texas. My dad was a U.S. Navy helicopter pilot, so my family moved around a lot. When I was in high school, my dad, Bud Smith, became a professor at UNA and we settled in Florence. I am very close to my family. I have an older sister, Becky, who lives in Florida. I have two younger brothers, Bret and Scott, who live in Florence with their families. I have 4 nieces, 3 nephews, a step-grandson and I am a great-aunt!

I have three grown children. Ryne lives and works in Huntsville, AL. He is 6'5" and wears a size 15 shoe! He enjoys any sport, but his favorite is playing basketball. Taylor Anne lives and works in Fairhope, AL. She graduated from the University of South Alabama with a finance degree, loves being by the beach, and got married four years ago to David. Carly graduated from the University of Alabama. She also lives and works in Fairhope. She is interested in organic gardening and is learning how to teach yoga.

One interesting fact that you can't tell just by looking at me is the I am totally deaf in my leaf ear. When I was about 15 years old I had a swimming accident that burst the cochlea in my ear. I had terrible vertigo and could not get out of bed for several weeks without falling. My ear healed but the nerve damage was too extensive to regain the hearing in that ear. You may not notice at all because I'm pretty good at reading lips!

When I am not working with students and teachers or planning school activities, I like to stay active by doing yoga, walking, or riding bikes. I enjoy reading, being with my family, and being outside. Jerry and I love to travel, too - last year we went to Uganda, Africa, to hike with the silverback gorillas!

These are my favorite things:

Restaurant: Ricatoni's

Fast food: Chipotle

Sport to watch: basketball

Sport to play: tennis

Color: navy blue

Dessert: Coca-Cola cake

Store: Target

Candy: Payday

Food: seafood

Pet: dog

I can't wait to learn more about each of you!

Hello and Welcome to AIS! I am excited to begin a new year at Athens Intermediate School. Prior to coming to AIS, I worked as both an ELA teacher (10 years) and an administrator (2 years) at Athens High School. I also worked as an ELA teacher at Athens Middle School and Martin Luther King, Jr. High School in Lithonia, GA. Outside of my job, I enjoy spending time with my two daughters, Breanne and Ava, and my wonderful husband, Kenny. I also enjoy reading, playing sports, and participating in church activities. I am an educator because nothing is more rewarding for me than helping a young person achieve his or her full potential. Every day is an opportunity for us to grow together.

Mr. S. Dewayne Drakeford

Hello! I am proud to be working at Athens Intermediate School. For nearly 30 years I have had the opportunity to work with at-risk youth in several high schools across Alabama where I was a teacher and coach in high school basketball and football. I have served as the Dean Of Students here at AIS, and currently serve as an Assistant Principal. I enjoy my role as husband to my wonderful wife Geanine. I also love to study the Bible, travel, and visit the sick and less fortunate. I entered the field of education to make a difference in the lives of all children. I am extremely proud to have assisted many young people over the years and help them be successful.

"The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education."
- Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
