About Cheer at Athens

  • Athens Cheer enjoys a long and proud tradition of excellence. Fielding cheer squads since 1958, our cheerleaders are leaders both on and off the field. These young ladies are first students then athletes. Most importantly, they are leaders; leaders in the classroom, leaders in our community, leaders in service and leaders on the field. The Athens Cheer Program is committed to building young ladies of character, compassion and confidence. Cheerleaders participate in football, basketball and competitions. We proudly sponsor:

    • Varsity Cheer (grades 10-12)
    • JV Cheer (grades 9-11)
    • Middle School Cheer (grades 7-8)

Being a part of Athens Cheer is a great way to build friendships, show school spirit and gain valuable leadership skills. Tryouts are held annually in the spring. To learn more about Athens Cheer, contact Cheer Coordinator Gia Russell at gia.russell@acs-k12.org.  It's great to be a Golden Eagle!

Mrs. Gia Russell

Hi! My name is Gia Russell, and I am the Athens High School Cheer Coordinator. I am responsible for the policies, procedures and oversight of the cheer programs at AHS, and I also serve as an Academy Principal. I am a graduate of Athens High, and I have nearly two decades of experience int the Athens City School System. It is an honor and privilege to support and guide these young student-athletes as they develop important life skills through cheer. It is my goal as the AHS Cheer Coordinator to create a safe, nurturing environment for our cheerleaders to learn discipline, responsibility, respect and leadership. It's great to be a Golden Eagle!
