I am excited to begin another year at Athens City Schools! My name is Alaina Fitzgerald, and I teach sixth grade Theatre at Athens Middle School. I spent my first five years at the high school before transferring to the middle school level. I have been teaching in Athens since August of 2013.
When I'm not teaching, you can find me with a cup of coffee, a good book, some poetry, or on a roadtrip. I love to travel and will say yes to pretty much any trip at any time! I have been to almost every state in the United States, many National Parks, and various places overseas. I am also an avid sports fan - Boston Celtics - St. Louis Cardinals - Roll Tide!
I firmly believe Theatre can be used to bridge a gap between diverse groups of people--people who may never have associated before. It is my goal to promote a positive learning enviornment. It is imperative that students feel safe and comfortable enough to express themselves. I want my classroom to be one of building up, not tearing down; of promotion, not demotion; of encouragement, rather than discouragement. Theatre has the unique ability that allow students to truly be themselves, or someone else, without judgement. In today's society where judgement and criticism are everywhere, I think it is super cool to be able to let go and freely express who you are without any worry of what others think or will say.
I look forward to meeting, learning, and growing with each of my students this year, and I cannot wait to see what this year holds!
