Welcome to 5th grade at Athens Intermediate School! I am thrilled to have the opportunity to teach students, to help them grow and learn.
I am a 5th grade science and math teacher with 16 years of teaching experience. I taught 3rd grade in LaGrange, Georgia and 3rd and 4th grades in Raleigh, North Carolina. I graduated from Auburn University with a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. I am currently a member of the National Science Teachers Association, Athens City Educators, and the National Educators Association. I was recognized as Athens Intermediate School's teacher of the year and Athens City School's Elementary Teacher of the year for the 2016-2017 school year. Six years ago I helped to start the Green Eagles Recycling Club. I have written numerous grants to equip my classroom, science lab, and students with hands-on learning experiences. I am also a teacher trainer for 5th Grade Alabama Math, Science, Technology, Intiative (AMSTI) for Alabama.
I have been married to my husband, Russell Smith, for 29 years. I have three children. Jake is 24 and a graduate of Auburn Univeristy. He is working as a chemical process engineer for Arclin in Ruston, LA, Hannah is 21 and a senior at Auburn University majoring in secondary education, history, and Mary Beth, 19, is a sophmore at Auburn University. I enjoy spending time with my family, spending time at the lake, reading, cooking and traveling.
I believe in teaching the whole child. I feel it is my duty to help each child reach his/her full potential, to instill in them a belief that they can reach it. This means setting high expectations in my classroom, helping students grow academically, socially, emotionally, to have curious minds, to become organized, and to be goal setters.
