Greetings and salutations! My name is Melinda Simpkins and I am the lead teacher of the First Class OSR Pre-K, Classroom 2. I am very excited and honored to be a member of the Athens Elemetary faculty!

Before my journey in education began, I was a liberal arts major with Calhoun Community College. Between the years of 2005 and 2008, you could find me on the stage as an actess with The Black Box Theatre Company.  I have performed great works of Shakespeare as well as delightful comedies such as the works of Neil Simon. I love my time that I spent with the theatre.  In the spring of 2009, I graduated with a dual major of associate degrees in the fields of Theater and English. In the summer of 2008, I accepted a job at a private pre-k to earn some sorely needed money.  Little did I know what started as a temporary summer job would change the outlook and direction my life would take. I fell in love with the field of education and the children whom I cared for. Unknowingly, I became dedicated to the vocation and wanted to be the best teacher and educator I had the ability to be. In 2014, I made the choice to go back to school and Athens State University was gracious enough to accept me as a student. I learned more about the field of education in my time with professors and classmates studying the art of education that I could have imagined possible. In May 2017, I obtained a bachelor's degree in the field of early childhood education. As a teacher, I strive to create a safe and welcoming learning environment for the students who enter my classroom. I want to be a positive influence for the students and encourage them not only to learn but also to explore and grow.

In my personal life, I enjoy an eclectic array of activities and hobbies.  I am an avid movie watcher and cinematic trivia collector. I enjoy going to "nerdy" conventions and meeting celebrities. I am a certified member of a Guinness World Record breaking event. I love to travel anywhere and everywhere. So far, my passport only has two stamps in it but that is something I hope to improve upon in the future. Up to date, I own 20 paires of Converse shoes. Photography is a favorite pass time of mine and in this digital age I feel as if it is a stress-less one. I also enjoy painting and crafting. When my mind becomes overwhelmed, I can bring out a paint pallet and canvas to ease my troubled mind. I don't have any children of my own, but I do have a four-legged fur baby whom I adopted from the local animal shelter and she has quickly become an important member of my family. I am the youngest member of my family (excluding the dog). I have my parents, a brother and a sister (each married to two wonderful people), and an imaginative nephew. I am very greatful for the life I have lead so far and I am looking forward to what my furture will bring.
