System Reading Coach
My role as system reading coach is perfectly matched to my vision for our students in Athens. Being a literate individual can forever alter the future of any student and so - I pursue organizational structures, professional development plans, and instructional methods with that idea always in mind. I work with Title 1, Special Education, and Curriculum to select and implement intervention programs. I work with the Alabama Teacher Mentoring Program and assist with student assessment. I lead monthly meetings with our reading coaches where we are able to specifically address the issues of our system and grow professionally through book studies.
After graduating from Unicoi County High School, in Erwin, Tennessee, I completed a bachelors degree in Music Therapy at Tennessee Technological University in 1986. I completed my internship at Broughton Hospital in Morganton, NC and worked as a Registered Music Therapist in the adolescent unit of the hospital. In 1987, I married my high school sweetheart, Steve. Moving with my husband's job to Knoxville, Tennessee in 1989, I accepted a graduate assistantship and completed my Master of Arts in Curriculum at Tennessee Technological University in 1991. That same year, our first child, Emilee was born. In 1995, our second child, Benjamin was born.
I taught special education in a variety of classroom settings for 9 years in Giles County Schools. In 2000 we moved to Athens, Alabama with my husband's job. I accepted the position of ARI (click here)- Reading Coach, at Athens Intermediate School in 2001 and transferred to system reading coach for Athens City Schools in 2003 and currently remain in that position.
