Title I, Part A
This program assists qualified students in eligible schools to meet performance standards in the areas of reading and math. Schools currently designated as Title I are: Athens Elementary (Schoolwide), Julian Newman Elementary (Schoolwide), Brookhill Elementary ( Schoolwide), and Cowart Elementary (Schoolwide).
All Title I schools promote and enhance parental involvement in schools. Each Title I school has a Parent Resource Center where parents are welcome to check out educational materials. Title I teachers assist classroom teachers in diagnosing student academic needs, provide intervention, and assist students, parents, and teachers, as needed.
Schools that make significant progress toward closing the achievement gap between student groups based on the SAT 10 test and the Alabama Reading and Math Test may be awarded additional federal and/or state funds to spend in their schools. Additional funds were awarded to Athens Elementary and Athens Intermediate in September 2007 based on the spring 2007 tests results.
The principal of each school operating a Title I school attests annually in writing to whether such school is in compliance with Highly qualified Requirements.( Section 1119(h)(i)(1) ) These attestations shall be made available to any member of the general public on request.
