Athens City Schools' Alternative Program has been developed for students who are not succeeding in the traditional setting. Our alternative school setting, Eagle Academy, is meant to offer an academic environment to meet the needs of these students. We attempt to provide individualized support services to assist them. Athens City Schools not only provides individualized instruction, but discipline for the disruptive student.
Students in grades 5-12 may be assigned to the Eagle Academy for varying lengths of time; usually a minimum of one grading period(nine weeks) to a maximum of one academic year. Students are asked to sign a contract for the duration of the time spent at Eagle Academy including completing assigned class work, maintaining a passing average, attending all classes on time, and exhibiting sustained positive behavior.
Students will complete their class work from the instructional assignments that are sent to them from their assigned teacher at their home school. Students are expected to complete the work within a reasonable amount of time for testing. On rare occassions instructional work is assigned by the classroom teacher assigned to Eagle Academy. Remediation and tutoring are provided for all students in preparation for standardized testing, which may include the Alabama High School Graduation Exam(AHSGE) and/or Alabama Reading and Math Test(ARMT).
Students will be eligible to return to their home school upon completing their signed contract, exhibiting a positive attitude, and demonstrating minimal disruptive behavior.
